Community sustainability is a function of many issues, chief among them housing affordability and community location, character and design. This keynote presentation – based on the ongoing policy development and research efforts at the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) in Chicago – will help reframe our community's understanding about the relationships among affordable housing, transportation choices, and regional growth and development patterns.
CNT's recently released Housing and Transportation Affordability Index challenges conventional wisdom about affordability, and demonstrates that the combined cost of housing and transportation places the vast majority of communities in this country beyond the reach of median income households. This work is helping to shape the national discourse on urban and transportation policy; and, its conclusions are entirely germane to public policy discourse in the Kansas City region.
Scott Bernstein is the president of the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT), founded in 1978. He is a nationally recognized leader in promoting urban sustainability – the more effective use of existing resources and community assets to improve the health of natural systems and the wealth of people, today and in the future. CNT is a creative think-and-do tank, an organization that that researches invents and tests urban strategies that use resources more efficiently and more equitably. CNT received a 2009 recipient of the McArthur Award for Creative and Innovative Institutions.
